$76 Million in Illegal E-Cigarettes Seized
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in collaboration with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), has announced the administrative seizure of approximately three million units of unauthorized e-cigarette products, valued at around $76 million. This seizure was part of a joint operation in July to inspect shipments and prevent illegal e-cigarettes from entering the United States.
“We at the FDA are on full alert and, together with our federal partners, are committed to stopping unauthorized e-cigarettes at our borders,” said FDA Commissioner Robert M. Califf, M.D.
Since the formation of a joint federal task force between the FDA and the Department of Justice in June, the frequency of these operations has increased to hinder the distribution of illegal e-cigarette products. All seized products originated from shipments in China, with many misdeclared to avoid duties and detection.
